While there was no way to create a color photographic print at the time, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii developed a triple projector that would project the three transparent plates through red, green, and blue filters to reconstruct the color view.

Modern technology now allows those century old color photographs to be reconstructed, and a full-color peek into Russia at the dawn of the 20th century.

Russia is basically using the Bush Principle here. If they see someone they feel is a threat to their allies, say, the United States against Iran, Russia reserves the right to attack pre-emptively using nuclear arms.

The United States has no place to complain, given that the United States government used this principle to justify its invasions of Afghanistan, Iraq, and (soon) Iran.

The Varyag, a Russian Slava-class missile cruiser dubbed 'the killer of aircraft carriers,' has started a series of live-firing exercises in the Pacific for the first time since a recent overhaul, a fleet spokesman said Monday.

Russia is sending a message with these exercises.

I just hope some folks in Washington are listening, particularly with regard to any possible upcoming attack on Iran.

The big question is, should we and/or Israel attack Iran, what is Russia prepared to do to protect her interests in that country?

Putin could have been a partner; instead, this administration, which appears to be pathologically incapable of finding anything approximating a sane foreign policy with a flashlight and both hands, turned him into an adversary.

Russia to fly 20-30 strategic patrol missions every month

Russia is set to drastically increase its number of strategic aviation patrol flights over the world's oceans to 20-30 a month, the Air Force commander said on Friday.

"We will be making 20-30 flights a month, not two or three, as was the case until recently," Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said.

In picking up the pace of these patrol missions, Russia is sending a not-so-subtle message to the West, and particularly to Washington.

Russia test-fires new intercontinental missile

Russia on Monday test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile, part of a system that can outperform any anti-missile system likely to be deployed, according to the officer in charge of missile forces.

I don;t know what the Russians are doing, but here is what I would do to foil an anti-missile system.

Make the re-entry vehicles slightly heavier on one side than the other. This will cause them to slip sideways while flying through the atmosphere and by rotating the RV around the long axis, it's path can be steered, much as the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo capsules were controlled during re-entry.

This system will turn a simple and predictable ballistic path through the atmosphere into a random "squiggle" in the sky that will be all but impossible to intercept.

Putin Calls U.S. `Frightening Monster,' Urges French Solidarity

`How can one be such a shining example of democracy at home and a frightening monster abroad?'' Putin said in an interview with French newspaper Le Monde transmitted live to journalists in Paris yesterday.

Unfortunately, we're not doing such a great job at being "...a shining example of democracy at home" either.

Right now, it's as though the US is in the rotation to be the geopolitical "bad guy", wreaking chaos wherever we go in the world, and winding up with a completely opposite outcomes from those this administration had expected, such as strengthening Iran's hand in the Middle East because of what we have done in Iraq.

Russia parliament votes to suspend arms treaty

Russia's parliament voted unanimously on Wednesday to suspend a key arms treaty limiting conventional forces in Europe, saying the United States and NATO were using the pact to undermine Russia's defenses.

Russia warns US, EU over Kosovo independence

Russia's Kosovo negotiator, Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko, declined to give any details about the steps, but said a recognition of Kosovo's independence by the West would lead to a humanitarian catastrophe in the province.

When asked if Russia had a plan of action if Kosovo declared independence, he said: "Yes, Russia's Foreign Ministry has prepared a whole host of steps and measures. These measures fully accord to our position on independence for Kosovo."

This could get very ugly for the Kosovars, and might be a flashpoint for military action by Russia against NATO - and any other nation which refuses to realize that Russia is dead serious about this.

First Russian nuclear fuel delivered to Iran

Russia on Monday delivered its first shipments of nuclear fuel to Iran's Bushehr power plant, setting a definite timeline for the start-up of the controversial plant. The fuel left Russia's Novosibirsk chemical plant after all payment conflicts stalling Russia's completion of Iran's first nuclear power plant were resolved last week, the Foreign Ministry said.

If Israel bombs the plant now, it will be a radioactive disaster.

A “resurgent Russia” is one more reason the Army should keep 40,000 soldiers in Europe, rather than cut to 24,000 as planned, the commander of United States Army Europe, Gen. David McKiernan, said Thursday.

“We keep an eye on certain indicators, some of which we’ve seen already,” such as a resumption of long-range reconnaissance flights, “arms sales to nation- states that [the United States] has differences with,” and indications that Russia is becoming involved with border conflicts in Georgia and Azerbaijan, he said.

Here comes the demonization of Russia.

This is precisely the tack this administration takes when it identifies another country (read: Iran and Iraq) with resources which the US desperately needs.

Then comes the "justification" for the taking of those resources, no matter the price in blood and money.

I'd almost be willing to bet that we see a return of the draft in the not too distant future.
